غوغل ستريت فيو..كاميرا خفية تزعج الاميركيين


خدمة صور الشوارع من غوغل ترصد لقطات محرجة للمارة في المدن الاميركية وتثير الجدل بشأن الخصوصية الشخصية.

تثير اللقطات العريضة لشوارع عدد من المدن الكبرى الاميركية التي باشر موقع غوغل الالكتروني بثها اخيرا ويظهر فيها المارة في اوضاع حرجة احيانا استياء المدافعين عن الحياة الخاصة في الولايات المتحدة.
وافتتح موقع غوغل الاسبوع الماضي خدمة "ستريت فيو" (مشاهد من الشارع) التي تعرض صورا مقربة لشوارع سان فرنسيسكو ونيويورك ولاس فيغاس وميامي ودنفر، ما اطلق منافسة محتدمة بين مختلف المواقع الالكترونية لرصد لقطات مثيرة لمارة في اوضاع محرجة، حتى ان مجلة "ويرد" (شاذ) اعلنت عن مسابقة بهذا الصدد.
ومن هذه اللقطات على سبيل المثال صورة من الخلف لرجل يتبول ورجل وامرأة ممددان في الشمس على العشب وقد خلعا بعض ملابسهما وامرأة شابة تضع ملابس داخلية مثيرة وشاب يتسلق سياجا وآخر يدخل الى متجر للمجلات الاباحية وشاب يعانق فتاة على الرصيف ومشرد افادت الصحافة فيما بعد عن مقتله، وغيرها.
وان كانت هذه اللقطات لا تتضمن اي شيء خارق، الا انه من الممكن التعرف الى المارة، الامر الذي اثار جدلا في الولايات المتحدة بالرغم من تشريع هذا البلد نشر صور ملتقطة في الاماكن العامة بما في ذلك صور المارة وهو امر غير مسموح به في العديد من الدول ومنها فرنسا.
وتطرح بعض هذه اللقطات مشكلات اكثر دقة، مثل صورة لعيادة في ميامي تجري عمليات اجهاض وقد طلبت مديرتها ايلاين دايمند من غوغل "تبديلها" بصورة اخرى مشيرة الى ظهور متظاهرين ضد الاجهاض امام مدخل العيادة في الصورة الحالية.
وان كان غوغل يؤكد انه من الممكن تقديم طلب لسحب صور معينة، الا ان ايلاين دايمند تقول "لم افلح حتى الان، لقد سعيت الى ذلك على وجه السرعة، لكن الامر ليس سهلا".
وهي تخشى ان يؤدي هذا المشهد الى ثني بعض النساء عن التوجه الى العيادة.
وفي المقابل، فان نوعية المشاهد التي يمكن "التنقل" في مواقعها وكأنما في نزهة، توفر خدمة ثمينة للمسافرين.
وقال فيليب وهو سائح فرنسي يتهيأ لتمضية عطلته الصيفية في الولايات المتحدة مبديا حماسته "تمكنت من زيارة الشارع حيث ساسكن في سان فرنسيسكو خلال اجازتي".
وتعود المشاهد المنشورة الى عدة اشهر حيث نشرت غوغل شبكة من الشاحنات الصغيرة التي جابت اوساط المدن لالتقاط صور عريضة من زاوية 360 درجة وهي تعتزم توسيع هذه الخدمة الى مدن اخرى، كما تنوي تحديث الصور بانتظام بدون ان تحدد جدولا زمنيا لذلك.
واحتجت ريبيكا جيشكي المتحدثة باسم "مؤسسة الحدود الالكترونية" (الكتريك فرونتير فاونديشن) المدافعة عن الحياة الخاصة على الانترنت، موضحة ان "الامر بمثابة تدخل في الحياة الخاصة للعديد من الاشخاص الذين التقطت صورهم في مشاهد غوغل".
وقالت "ما قام به غوغل غير مشروع. من المشروع تماما التقاط صور في اماكن عامة ولا نريد تغيير ذلك، لكن ما حصل غير مسؤول" مضيفة "كان في وسعهم ان ينتظروا تطوير تكنولوجيا قادرة على تمويه الوجوه".
وقال كيفن بانكستون محامي الجمعية "يتوقع كل واحد منا ان يحظى ببعض الحميمية حين ينصرف الى مهامه اليومية".
وعبر جون باتيل الخبير المشهور في قضايا الانترنت عن قلقه متسائلا على موقعه الالكتروني الشخصي "كم من الوقت سيمضي حتى يبدأ بث اشرطة فيديو بثا مباشرا؟"
من جهته اعتبر موقع غوغل ان "هذه الصور لا تختلف اطلاقا عما يمكن لاي شخص تصويره او مشاهدته في الشارع"، مؤكدا على شرعية هذه اللقطات.
ويضاف هذا الجدل الى الشبهات التي حامت حول اللقطات الجوية للارض التي تبثها خدمة "غوغل ايرث" بعد مخطط تفجير مطار جون كينيدي في نيويورك الذي كشف السبت.
وقد اكد موقع "ذي سموكينغ غان" المتخصص في نشر وثائق الشرطة ان احد المشتبه بهم افاد بانه استخدم صور غوغل الجوية لتحضير الاعتداء.
ولا يقتصر نشر صور شوارع على الانترنت على موقع غوغل وحده اذ تعرض شركة مايكروسوفت على سبيل المثال خدمة مماثلة ولو باقل دقة.

Google’s Timeline Feature

I’m curious what interesting searches you have done with Google’s recently launched timeline operator, part of Google Experimental (http://www.google.com/experimental/). To recall, adding view:timeline (http://www.google.com/views?q=alan+moore+view%3Atimeline&btnGt=Search&hl=en) to any search query will now show a timeline view of Google results (snippets are broken down into sequentially listed dates; the view:map operator on the other hand presents results on a map).

On a side-note, it might be revealing to see a combination of Google’s location & time axis results. You’d enter, say, “Albert Einstein,” and see a Google Maps illustration with placemarks labeled with years, and arrows pointing out the movement during the years (the locations at which Einstein lived, as well as otherwise important places in his life). This could also be turned into a map widget with a slidable control, again showing different placemarks – e.g. a person’s or an army’s movement – over time.

Your Google Phone Is Coming, Sorta, Next Year, Journal Says

Google Inc. is close to unveiling its long-planned strategy to shake up the wireless market, people familiar with the matter say. The Web giant's ambitious goal: to make applications and services as accessible on cellphones as they are on the Internet.
In a move likely to kick off an intense debate about the future shape of the cellphone industry, Google wants to make it easier for cellphone customers to get a variety of extra services on their phones -- from maps to social-networking features to video-sharing. To get its way, however, the search giant will have to overcome resistance from wireless carriers and deal with potentially thorny security and privacy issues.
What I want to know is this: Will I be locked into certain software apps on my Google phone - or can I treat it with the same indifference I do with the PC Internet? In other words, will I be able to wipe the Google apps off, and use other apps if I choose to? Or is this going to be a distribution play for Google's apps?

The Google-powered phones are expected to wrap together several Google applications -- among them, its search engine, Google Maps, YouTube and Gmail email -- that have already made their way onto some mobile devices. The most radical element of the plan, though, is Google's push to make the phones' software "open" right down to the operating system, the layer that controls applications and interacts with the hardware. That means independent software developers would get access to the tools they need to build additional phone features.
But that still doesn't tell me if I can use the phone as a blank slate, so to speak, or if I have to use Google software.

غوغل تستثمر مئات الملايين في الطاقة المتجددة


عملاقة برمجيات الانترنت ترفع شعار 'طاقة متجددة أرخص من الفحم' لتوليد كهرباء تكفي مدينة في حجم سان فرانسيسكو.
سان فرانسيسكو - قالت شركة غوغل لخدمات الانترنت الثلاثاء إنها تعتزم إنفاق مئات الملايين من الدولارات للمساعدة في خفض كلفة انتاج الكهرباء من مصادر الطاقة الجديدة مقارنة بأسعار توليدها باستخدام الفحم.


وقالت غوغل ان هذا المشروع الذي أطلقت عليه "طاقة متجددة أرخص من الفحم" انها ستوظف عشرات المهندسين وتستهدف تمويل استثمارات في توليد الكهرباء من الطاقة الحرارية الشمسية وطاقة الرياح ونظم استغلال حرارة باطن الارض وغيرها من التكنولوجيات الجديدة.


وتنوي غوغل أن تصبح من أوائل عملاء هذا المشروع باستخدام الكهرباء المولدة في تشغيل مراكز بيانات الكمبيوتر الضخمة التابعة لها وبيع الفائض.


وقال لاري بيج الذي شارك في تأسيس غوغل ورئيس وحدة المنتجات بها في بيان "هدفنا هو انتاج واحد غيغاوات من الطاقة المتجددة بأسعار أقل من الفحم. ونحن متفائلون لان هذا يمكن أن يتم في غضون سنوات وليس عقوداً".


وتكفي هذه الكمية من الكهرباء مدينة في حجم سان فرانسيسكو.

وقال بيج وسيرجي برين (34 عاماً) وهو الشريك الاخر في تأسيس غوغل انهما ينويان الترخيص باستخدام أي تكنولوجيا يتم التوصل اليها لشركات أخرى.


ولا تكشف غوغل عن حجم استهلاكها من الكهرباء في مراكز البيانات العملاقة لكن خبراء محليين يقولون ان الشركة سريعة النمو تعتبر من أكبر مستهلكي الطاقة في وادي السيليكون.


واستفادت غوغل في اطلاق الحملة من السيولة الكبيرة التي تتمتع بها وانتشار اسمها التجاري وتزايد قيمتها السوقية.

فقد أصبحت الآن سادس أكبر شركة أميركية من حيث القيمة السوقية بعد ان قفزت أسهمها في الفترة الاخيرة.

وتأتي هذه الخطة في وقت اقتربت فيه أسعار النفط من 100 دولار للبرميل كما أن الفحم الذي يولد 40 بالمائة من احتياجات العالم من الكهرباء يواجه ضغوطاً تنظيمية وبيئية ربما ترفع أسعاره.

Google Releases Chart Image Generator

Google released a chart generator service they are calling the Google Chart API (http://code.google.com/apis/chart/). Usage is quite straightforward: you link to an image in the form of a parameterized URL, e.g. (line break added)

... and Google returns a PNG graphic containing the chart. For instance, above URL results in the following image:

Splitting up the image URL parameters, you can see what it's made up of:

I'm not linking live to Google but caching this image on my server instead, just in case, as Google limits your requests to this API to 50,000 per day. Even with that limit, you can grab the image and do the caching on your own server automatically (by copying the binary), which would mean 50,000 requests will be good enough for many use cases.

This service is really neat all in all. The last time (http://www.coverbrowser.com/a-z) I wanted to do a dynamic 3D pie chart as above, I used some PHP scripts (accessing the GD image library) which were ugly to configure, and not just because the code was obfuscated to make it hard to remove "created by" messages in the image. Then again I'm not sure the Google Charts API does everything other services can do, and we also don't know how long they will keep up support for it – think of other half-cancelled APIs like the Google SOAP API (and there doesn't seem to be a quick way for Google to make money from the Google Chart API yet... adding ads would be too noisy for users for this purpose, and there's no way to make the ad clickable anyway).

Google Talk Translation Bots

Google announced (http://googletalk.blogspot.com/2007/12/merry-christmas-god-jul-and.html) they introduced a couple of translation bots to their chat software Google Talk (http://www.google.com/talk/). For instance, invite en2zh@bot.talk.google.com, open a chat with it, and then whenever you type something in English, the bot will repeat the same in Chinese (say e.g. “hello” and the bot correctly translates to “你好”). This feature might come in handy in group chat when you talk to someone with another native language.
Besides en2zh, the other supported language pairs are, according to Google: ar2en, bg2en, de2en, de2fr, el2en, en2ar, en2de, en2el, en2es, en2fr, en2it, en2ja, en2ko, en2nl, en2ru, es2en, fi2en, fr2de, fr2en, hi2en, hr2en, it2en, ja2en, ko2en, nl2en, ru2en, uk2en, ur2en, zh2en. Google just released the Social Graph API (http://code.google.com/apis/socialgraph/). Brad Fitzpatrick* in a blog post (http://google-code-updates.blogspot.com/2008/02/urls-are-people-too.html) explains that Google crawls publicly available social network data in the form of XFN (XHTML Friends Network) or FOAF (Friend Of A Friend)**... and then makes this relationship data available via JSON through the API, which you call by simply adding different parameters to a URL. Relationships may be e.g. “John is the Twitter friend of Susan” or “Mary has Peter in her blogroll.” Here’s a link using XFN (http://gmpg.org/xfn/), for instance:

The Social Graph homepage says with this API, developers can “utilize public connections their users have already created in other web services.” Brad says this will enable you as developer to allow your users to bring their existing social connections with them when joining your site so that they will “spend less time rebuilding their social networks.” (Brad also explains things a video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LabCylbapuM).) Google disclaims that the API “returns web addresses of public pages and publicly declared connections between them” but “cannot access non-public information.”
A sample application Google points to is called “My Connections (http://socialgraph-resources.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/samples/findcontacts.html).” It lets you enter URLs to your blogs or profile pages. I entered bradfitz.com and it then listed contacts Brad links to, as well as contacts linking to Brad.

Google’s AJAX Translation API

Google has just released a new AJAX API which allows developers to easily add machine translation capabilities to their websites. Using the Google AJAX Language API (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxlanguage/), you can detect the language of a piece of text and translate it into any of the supported Google Translate languages.

As a simple example, you can translate the first few paragraphs of this post into Arabic, Chinese (Simplified or Traditional), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish using the drop down at the end of the post (assuming you have JavaScript enabled in your browser).*

The translations are carried out by Google's own statistical machine translation system, which they switched to for all their languages pairs last year (http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-10-23-n54.html), so they're far from perfect but should give a good basic understanding of the text.
